Where To Play Padel In Newcastle

Newcastle’s padel scene is very “start-up that suddenly found product–market fit”: a handful of good places you can book today, a few solid options just outside the city, and some big, shiny projects on the way. Here’s the whole picture without the faff.

The Newcastle Padel Map (over-explained edition)

Think of the options in three buckets:

  1. Play Today (in the city)
  2. Close-by (easy drive, lots of courts)
  3. Incoming (the “soon” bucket)

1) Play Today (in the city)

Project Padel — Benton

What it is: Newcastle’s first dedicated padel venue. Three indoor courts, modern changing rooms and a café/lounge, so the only weather you’ll notice is on the walk from the car park.
Booking: On Playtomic. Pay-and-play plus memberships, coaching, socials and the usual “mix-ins” if you just want to drop into a levelled session.
Vibe: Friendly, local hub energy; good for first-timers and regulars who want a reliable 90 minutes after work.
Where: NE12 9SZ (North Tyneside Industrial Estate).

2) Close-by (easy drive, lots of courts)

True Padel — Sunderland (≈25–35 mins from city centre)

What it is: A big, purpose-built indoor club with 7 courts (five doubles + two singles). Heated sports lounge, proper changing, leagues, tournaments, coaching.
Booking: Playtomic.
Vibe: “Padel as a night out with friends” — plenty of organised play and event nights.

True Padel — Durham (≈30–40 mins south)

What it is: Flagship indoor venue with 9 courts and a steady calendar of mix-ins and comps. If your group wants guaranteed court availability at peak times, this is often the easiest place to lock something in.
Booking: Playtomic.
Vibe: Busy, student-meets-after-work crowd; lots of levelled sessions.

Hexham Tennis Club — Community Padel (≈35–45 mins west)

What it is: Outdoor community padel court alongside the tennis club. Budget-friendly and straightforward.
Best for: Daylight hours, casual hits, and anyone who prefers an outdoor feel.
Booking: Playtomic.

3) Incoming (the “soon” bucket)

City Centre pop-up — Stephenson Quarter (by Central Station)

What it is: Temporary permission granted for three floodlit outdoor courts on an unused plot near the Pattern Shop and UTC. Facilities include reception and changing on two levels.
When: Permission runs to May 2028; opening date TBC.
Why you care: Central-as-it-gets courts for post-work play and spontaneous “we’re in town” games.

Pure Padel — Gosforth Park (planned)

What it is: Announced as an 8-court indoor flagship for the North East.
When: Targeted for early 2026.
Why you care: More indoor capacity north of town, plus the kind of event/league schedule that a multi-court complex unlocks.

How to actually get on court (the 2-minute drill)

  • Download Playtomic. It’s where you’ll book Project Padel, True Padel (Durham/Sunderland), and Hexham. Set your location to Newcastle and expand the radius to 30–40km.
  • Pick your format.
    • Court booking = bring three mates.
    • Mix-in/social = turn up and get matched at your level.
    • Coaching = the quickest route from “confused tennis” to “competent padel”.
  • Peak vs off-peak. After-work and weekends go first. If you’re flexible, late mornings/early afternoons are your friend.
  • New player tip: Choose “Beginner/Improver” mix-ins for your first few sessions; you’ll learn walls, lobs and Bandejas faster than figuring it out in a sweaty 6–4, 7–5.

Mini neighbourhood guide (so you can pair padel with life)

  • Benton (Project Padel): plenty of parking; easy from the Coast Road or A19. Good for straight-in, straight-out weeknight slots.
  • Sunderland/Durham (True Padel): bigger venues = more session types; ideal if your group’s availability is awkward or you want structured leagues.
  • City Centre (incoming): walk-able from Central Station. Expect it to become the “coffee → court → pint” triangle.

Quick answers people ask in WhatsApp groups

  • Rackets/balls? Hire and buy options on site at the bigger venues.
  • Can kids play? Yes — look for junior coaching blocks.
  • Singles padel… is that real? At Sunderland, yes; it’s brilliant for footwork and timing before doubles leagues.
  • Will it be rammed this winter? The indoor clubs absorb a lot of demand; book early for weekday 6–9pm.
